First of all, a lot of you may not know where Newfoundland is. This is a map of Newfoundland and Labrador on the east coast of Canada. You can see Quebec to the left of Labrador as well as a part of the US below.

Newfoundland will always be home to me. I lived there for 30 years before moving to the US to marry the man of my dreams, S. John Ross. I grew up as a Townie! In other words, I am from the capital city of St. John's. (For those of you outside our province, people outside the city of St. John's are affectionately called Baymen and there is a rivalry of sorts between Baymen and Townies)!

Newfoundland is a very beautiful province. There are many scenic and historic sites to be seen. Evergreen forests cover much of the island. There are mountain ranges along the Great Northern Peninsula and in Labrador. In the spring, it is not unusual to see an Ice Berg if you are near the ocean. The ocean itself is beautiful, so dark and angry much of the time.

In addition to Newfoundland being a beautiful place to live or visit, it is home to the friendliest people on Earth. Many people who have visted our province are amazed and impressed at just how friendly Newfies can be. There are Newfie Jokes out there, to try to make Newfies look stupid. In fact, because of the jokes, some Newfoundlanders don't like being called a Newfie. But I am proud to be a Newfie. We are a rare breed.

Newfoundlanders have their own way of speaking, as do many cultures. In fact, some Newfies cannot understand other Newfies. It depends on where you are from in the province. I want to share some Newfie sayings with you. These were not all familiar to me and being a townie, I didn't know all the fishing slang. John has made a word search puzzle full of Newfie expressions so try it and let us know what you think.

Newfoundland is also known for having some very unusual place names. Places were named after anything and everything. Some were humorous and some much more serious. The names are often commented on as being strange, places like Joe Batt's Arm and Come by Chance.

One of my favorite places to visit when I lived home was a little tiny island, Fogo Island, in Notre Dame Bay, north of the town of Gander. Fogo Island is a wonderful place to visit. Many of my friends (whom I consider family) are from this beautiful island so drop in for a visit if you have the time.
